The Origin of The Humble Approach

After decades of real world experience in sales, both as a practitioner and as a sales leader,
Ben Gaston, our founder, recognised a considerable gap in how the profession was positioned and practiced. With a continued responsibility for driving business growth, he identified three core challenges: 

He observed that sales as a profession is widely misunderstood, making it one of the most demanding roles in business. He also realised that many existing sales methods tend to overlook the critical human-to-human connections required for sustained growth, and that sales language also creates unrealistic expectations, unnecessary pressure and friction within the customer experience.

Recognising the impact of these gaps within the industry, Ben set out to establish a more disciplined, human-centred approach. This led to the creation of THE HUMBLE SALE, and THE HUMBLE SALE® PLAYBOOK.

The Humble Sale takes proven performance principles from the world of theatre and translates them into a practical framework for sales. The result is a human-centred approach that improves confidence, strengthens conversations and drives repeatable sales performance within teams.

Our Theatrical Inspiration

Alongside his work in business, Ben has spent more than 30 years in theatre as a performer and director and has served as a volunteer theatre chairman. These experiences cumulatively shaped how he thinks about professional performance: preparation done early, presence in the moment and exploration of the story’s unique context to connect truthfully with audiences.

Many sales teams are asked to perform in high-stakes conversations with real consequence, often with multiple stakeholders, uncertainty and reputational risk in the room. Theatre offers a practical lens for building habits that hold up in those moments.

At the heart of THE HUMBLE SALE® PLAYBOOK are rehearsal-led techniques that support credible, human-centred selling. Empathy, active listening, observation and improvisation become practical skills: reading the room, staying curious, responding with care and handling the unexpected without losing composure.
